Day 17 – Perfect Dark 64
Perfect Dark 64 holds MASSIVE nostalgia for me. First and foremost…the day it came out in Europe, my 14th Birthday Friday June 30th 2000. I think I will live my whole life now with never having another game released on my birthday that happens to fall into my top 10 games of all time.
After years of loving up the Goldeneye Multi-player with friends…Perfect Dark arrived, bringing a hell of a lot of new options and modes to ensure that this would see the N64 off with a godlike multi-player FPS, a game that held up well quite a way into the next generation of consoles too.
I cherish still having my original N64 cart of this game with my game save and multi-player profile still in tact, with a combined total playtime measured in weeks. Many a weekend would consist of me and upto 3 friends hammering multi-player all night long, whether it was everyone for themselves, or teaming up against a series of bots (naturally the bots were given male heads on female bodies for the lols).
I was hoping this would get a re-release for many many years, and thankfully in 2010 Rare (and 4J) made it true, I was worried the game wouldn’t hold up today against the modern FPS crowd, and maybe it doesn’t, but the nostalgia in me and the decent twin analogue stick control translation made it awesome all over again when played online with the very same friends I played with that I used to play with back in my room in the early 00’s.
Multi-player aside, the game was a masterpiece for N64 at the time, great visuals and more happening (thanks to the Expansion Pak), a lot of voice acting (rare for N64 games), and a cool original story, containing a wide range of levels and goals.
New kids or outsiders may look to Perfect Dark Zero being the sequel to look out for after PD64 in terms of great gameplay, but after the Microsoft purchase of RARE, most of the PD64 dev team moved on to form "Free Radical Design"…and indeed a game they made will land a day of it’s own further down the line 🙂
